Cameron University will welcome nearly 30 area high school graduates to campus this fall through its prestigious Presidential Leaders and University Scholars program.
Cameron's PLUS program is a highly selective and competitive scholarship that is awarded to outstanding high school seniors who excel in the areas of academics, leadership, involvement and community service. PLUS equips these scholars with the skills needed to become ethical leaders and responsible citizens in their circle of influence.
"We believe students learn a great deal through leadership training and involvement in campus and community activities," said Dr. Leslie Cothren, Dean of Students. "In order to maintain the PLUS scholarship, each of these students must participate in leadership training, obtain leadership experience through community service, be involved in a campus organization, and participate in campus events during the fall and spring semesters."
PLUS participation spans four years, focusing on helping students learn skills to help them be successful after college graduation. The students have already attended an overnight retreat where they got to know each other and began forming strong bonds to help them be successful during their college experience. Throughout their four years, topics to be covered will include emotional intelligence, professional etiquette, professional and safe social media usage, and ethical decision making. Additionally, woven through their PLUS experience students will learn career development, network with alumni, and put their leadership skills into practice.
At the completion of each semester, program advisors measure and evaluate each scholar's contribution to the program. The scholarship is renewable for those who successfully complete program requirements.
