Sasolburg Operations retains Green Drop Certification

Sasolburg, Free State - Sasol's Sasolburg Operations has been recognised as one of South Africa's leading wastewater services performers in the 2024 national Green Drop assessment, achieving exceptional scores across all key performance areas and earning multiple top national accolades.

In the latest Green Drop report for public entities and private systems released on 31 March 2026, Sasolburg Operations achieved a 96,8% Green Drop score at plant level and a 92,9% Green Drop score at Water Services Institution (WSI) level, securing Green Drop Certification and ranking as the second-best performing wastewater services institution in the country in its category.

In addition, Sasol's Sasolburg Operations won the award for Best Private Technical site Assessment 2025 with an outstanding Technical Site Assessment (TSA) score of 94%.

According to the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina the Green Drop results demonstrate that improvement is possible where leadership, technical competence, and sound financial management converge. "Resilient water and sanitation systems are not only environmental imperatives but also drivers of economic development, public health, and social dignity," she said.

Sasol was commended for its excellent performance, maintaining its treatment facilities in an exemplary low risk position. During the audit it achieved 100% for Capacity Management, 95% for Environmental Management, 85% for Financial Management, 88% for Technical Management and 100% for Effluent and Sludge Compliance.

Sasolburg Operations treats 27,01 kL/d industrial and domestic wastewater in Sasolburg and operates two pump stations and 21,2 km sewer pipelines as part of its wastewater conveyance infrastructure.

In addition, Sasol is strengthening its engagement with local communities to address shared water, sanitation and environmental priorities. Support to the Metsimaholo Local Municipality includes funding a broader Sasolburg/Zamdela sanitation system review to identify opportunities to reduce raw sewage losses and limit stormwater ingress. These initiatives may also positively support Sasol's wastewater treatment operations.
