We Must Continue to Push for Affordable Health Care

Now that Congress has passed and President Trump has signed legislation to reopen the government, we must not lose sight of the reason that the shutdown began: the refusal by President Trump and his congressional allies to negotiate a solution to the looming health care crisis caused by the upcoming expiration of Affordable Care Act subsidies.

While Republican leaders in the Senate have agreed to hold a vote on extending the subsidies, they have not committed to supporting an extension. The expiration of these subsidies, along with cuts to Medicaid, will drive up insurance costs for all of us and destroy over half a million health care jobs.

CWA members will not give up on this fight. Health care coverage is a matter of life and death. We expect our elected representatives to extend the ACA subsidies before they expire at the end of this year. If they do not, we will hold them accountable at the ballot box and elect a Congress that understands that the health and well-being of working people is more important than the bottom line of billionaires.
