Mapping of Media and Information Literacy Conducted in Kazakhstan

Within the period between March and May 2025, UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty , in cooperation with the MediaNet International Center for Journalism , conducted a comprehensive study of the state of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in Kazakhstan.

The final report includes:

  • Mapping of key stakeholders in the field of MIL;
  • Analysis of official responses from government bodies reflecting current initiatives and measures to promote media literacy;
  • Assessment of problematic issues and major challenges;
  • Recommendations for further development of media literacy for various target groups.

The full text of the final report is accessible in English, Kazakh and Russian languages.

UNESCO supports the development of Media and Information Literacy and Digital Competencies for all to enable people's ability to engage critically with information, navigate the online environment safely, and help build trust in our information ecosystem and in digital technologies.

Media and Information Literacy provides a set of essential skills to address the challenges of the 21st century including the proliferation of mis- and disinformation and hate speech, the decline of trust in media and digital innovations notably Artificial Intelligence.
