The City of Malibu and Heal the Bay invite community members of all ages to take part in California Coastal Cleanup Day 2025 at Surfrider Beach on Saturday, September 20, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
"Protecting our coast is at the heart of Malibu's identity and values," said Mayor Marianne Riggins. "Coastal Cleanup Day is a powerful way for our community to come together, take direct action, and show our shared commitment to preserving the beauty and health of our beaches and ocean for generations to come."
This annual event is part of the City's strong commitment to protecting Malibu's beautiful and fragile coastal environment. By removing trash and debris, volunteers help prevent waste from polluting the ocean and harming marine life, while contributing to the global effort to safeguard coastal ecosystems.
California Coastal Cleanup Day is the state's largest annual volunteer event, and a cornerstone of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), the world's largest volunteer effort to protect oceans and waterways. The event mobilizes tens of thousands of Californians at hundreds of events to remove trash and debris from beaches, rivers, and other waterways.
In 2024 alone, more than 46,000 volunteers statewide collected nearly 400,000 pounds of trash and recyclables. Since its launch in 1985, California Coastal Cleanup Day has engaged over 1.7 million volunteers, who together have removed nearly 27 million pounds of waste from the environment.
Globally, the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by the Ocean Conservancy, spans more than 150 countries and engages about 16 million volunteers, making it the largest coordinated volunteer effort of its kind on the planet.
