The Ambassador of the European Union to the Pacific, H.E. Barbara Plinkert, concluded a high-level visit to the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), reaffirming the EU's commitment to sustainable development and regional partnership.
During her visit, Ambassador Plinkert held official meetings with Vice President Hon. Aaron Palik, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Hon. Lorin Robert, Secretary of Environment, Climate Change and Emergency Management Hon. Andrew Yatilman and Secretary of the Department of Resources and Development Hon. Elina Akinaga. Discussions centered on deepening EU-FSM cooperation in areas of climate resilience, environmental protection, and inclusive governance.
Ambassador Plinkert also met with partners and local media, highlighting the EU's longstanding commitment to supporting FSM through a wide range of development projects. She also visited several EU-funded initiatives focused on climate adaptation, community infrastructure, and environmental sustainability.
A key highlight of the visit was the official launch of the new EU-funded project aimed at Strengthening Water and Sanitation Governance in FSM. With an initial investment of EUR 3 million (USD 3.5million), the project will establish a dedicated Water Unit within FSM's Department of Resources and Development, develop the country's first national water policy and regulatory framework, and strengthen institutional capacity through training and strategic planning. This initiative will enhance national capacity for water resource management, improve sanitation services, and ensure equitable access to clean water across FSM's states.
"This project reflects the EU's strong commitment to supporting FSM's development priorities and improving the lives of its citizens," said Ambassador Plinkert. "Water is a fundamental human right, and we are proud to partner with FSM in building resilient systems that serve communities now and into the future."
The EU remains a steadfast partner for the Pacific region, working alongside governments and communities to promote sustainable development, climate action, and good governance.
