Cary Celebrates Global Garbage Man Day by Honoring Solid Waste Collection Team

Cary, NC - On June 17, Global Garbage Man Day, Cary recognizes and celebrates the dedicated Solid Waste collection staff who help keep the community clean, safe, and sustainable every day of the year. From early morning routes to year-round collection services, these employees provide reliable service that residents depend on. Cary's Solid Waste team collects garbage, recycling, yard waste, cooking oil, and motor oil, as well as bulky items and appliances, and manages the community's annual loose leaf collection season.

Support Solid Waste collection crews by properly placing carts at the curb, keeping collection areas free of obstacles, setting carts out on time, and ensuring lids close completely.

Solid Waste Collection By the Numbers
  • Cary's Solid Waste team is made up of 72 full-time employees.
  • The department operates a fleet of 31 vehicles and 30 collection routes, providing weekly curbside service to 56,000 households.
  • One automated side-loader collection vehicle can collect 1,200 carts in a single day.
  • A solid waste collection vehicle can hold approximately 13 tons of material, and Cary's Solid Waste team typically collects one to two full truckloads per vehicle each day.
