Upcoming El Camino Real Closures in Burlingame Jan 21-Feb 3

Published: Jan 16, 2026

San Mateo County ― Caltrans has scheduled upcoming closures on El Camino Real in Burlingame to continue tree removal work. Flaggers will be utilized within the detours to allow for left turns on California during periods of heavy traffic. The closures on El Camino Real will occur on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

  • Wednesday, January 21 from Trousdale Drive to Rosedale Avenue
  • Thursday, January 22 - Tuesday, February 3 from Lincoln Avenue to Rosedale Avenue

It's important for drivers to follow the authorized, posted detours because many side streets adjacent to El Camino Real are too narrow to accommodate large traffic volumes and can quickly become gridlocked and dangerous.

The authorized detours are:

Trousdale Drive to Rosedale Drive

Driving north on El Camino Real, turn right on Rosedale, left on California, left on Trousdale, and right on El Camino Real.
Driving south on El Camino Real, turn right on Trousdale Ave, left on Marco Polo Way, left on Rey Dr., and right on El Camino Real.

Lincoln Avenue to Rosedale Avenue

Driving north on El Camino Real, turn right on Lincoln, left on California, and left on Rosedale, right on El Camino Real.
Driving south on El Camino Real, turn left on Rosedale, right on California, right on Lincoln, and left on El Camino Real.

Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain this vital thoroughfare.

About the Project

The $173M El Camino Real roadway rehabilitation project will maintain El Camino Real as a safe, accessible, and reliable transportation corridor. The project encompasses repaving the road and upgrading sidewalks for enhanced mobility. It also aims to reduce localized flooding and improve visibility. This vital section of SR-82, traversing Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, and Millbrae, is also home to the historic The Howard-Ralston Eucalyptus Tree Rows which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The grove will be reinvigorated with the planting of many new trees.
