NORFOLK, Va. - A Portsmouth man was sentenced yesterday to four years and nine months in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to court documents, after law enforcement conducted three controlled purchases of cocaine from Jamaro Lamont Fields, 37, on April 23, 2025, Portsmouth Police searched Fields' residence. Detectives located ammunition, scales, cutting agents, and packaging material in the residence and recovered 11 grams of fentanyl from Fields' person. From Fields' vehicle, investigators recovered 14 grams of fentanyl, 12 grams of cocaine, and a handgun.
Fields was convicted in 2013 of aggravated sexual battery against a 6-year-old victim and in 2024 for failing to register as a sex offender. As a previously convicted felon, Fields cannot legally possess firearms or ammunition.
Theophani K. Stamos, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Anthony A. Spotswood, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Washington Field Division, made the announcement after sentencing by U.S. District Judge Mark S. Davis.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys Hannah E. Wirt and Nikolas Nelson prosecuted the case.
