Turning uncertainty into opportunity: mindsets to move your career forward

Career pivots aren't linear - and they're rarely comfortable.

At a recent AU Grad Networking Group session, the conversation focused less on having a perfect plan and more on the mindset shifts that help people move forward with clarity.

Criminal Justice and Psychology graduate Austin Tolbert '18 originally saw himself in law enforcement at the federal level, but through unexpected experiences and connections, he said yes to a different opportunity. As a design engineer at Fire System Design Works, Tolbert currently creates and optimizes fire sprinkler systems while managing his own team.

Tolbert's journey is a reminder that career paths don't always follow the plan you start with, but they can still lead to meaningful growth when you stay open-minded.

Throughout the conversation, several themes emerged:

Adopt a growth mindset.

Opportunities don't always show up clearly labeled. Often, they come with uncertainty or require stepping outside of your comfort zone. Being willing to say yes and to learn along the way can open doors that wouldn't otherwise be visible.

Don't do it alone.

One of the strongest reminders: The hardest way to navigate your career is in isolation. Building relationships, maintaining connections, and asking for help are essential. Like anything meaningful, relationships require ongoing attention and effort.

Commit to continuous learning.

Career pivots often involve entering unfamiliar territory. Taking initiative to learn new skills, explore interests, and demonstrate curiosity can make all the difference. Investing in yourself is one of the most reliable ways to create long-term opportunity.

Reframe rejection and setbacks.

A "no" is rarely final - it often means "not right now." Shifting perspective can turn obstacles into opportunities. And if you don't ask, the answer is always no. More often than not, the greatest regret isn't making the wrong move - it's not making a move at all.

Balance planning with flexibility.

Having a plan is valuable, but being too rigid can limit growth. Careers evolve, and staying adaptable allows you to respond to new opportunities as they arise. Being firm in your values while flexible in your path is key.

Take action before you feel ready.

Confidence doesn't always come first. In many cases, it's built through experience. Taking chances, putting yourself out there, and figuring it out as you go are often necessary steps forward.

Ultimately, career growth is not about having everything mapped out. It's about staying open, continuing to learn, and being willing to take thoughtful risks.
