EU-Supported Generations For Peace Campaign Raises Awareness of Digital Risks Associated with Electronic Games

Under the patronage of Prince Faisal bin Al Hussein, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Generations For Peace, the organisation launched a national awareness campaign on Monday under the slogan "Playing is their right… their safety is our duty", aiming to raise awareness of the digital risks associated with electronic games and promote safer online environments for children and youth in Jordan.

The campaign is supported by the European Union through the EU-funded Hudour Programme, implemented by Generations For Peace. The programme empowers young Jordanians with essential digital skills, civic engagement opportunities, and mental health and psychosocial support, helping them navigate the online world safely and confidently while strengthening their preparedness for the labour market and community participation.

The launch event was attended by Their Royal Highnesses Prince Omar bin Faisal, Princess Aya bint Faisal, Princess Sarah bint Faisal, and Princess Aisha bint Faisal.

The campaign responds to the rapid increase in the use of electronic games and digital platforms among young people. It seeks to strengthen awareness of online risks, encourage responsible digital behaviour, and promote digital safety concepts to ensure a safer and more inclusive digital environment.

During the event, the Generations For Peace Institute presented a new study examining the most significant digital risks facing young women and men in online spaces. The study highlighted key statistics on the potential harm caused by unsafe digital practices and emphasised the shared responsibility of parents, caregivers, and young people in promoting safe online engagement.

A panel discussion also brought together representatives from the Jordanian Esports Federation, security officials, and representatives from UNICEF to discuss safe online gaming, prevention methods, and ways to make the digital space safer for young users.

The campaign is built around three core pillars: awareness, behavioural change, and protection and community response. Together, these pillars aim to contribute to building a safer digital environment for young people of all ages and enhancing public awareness of safe digital practices.

The European Union Ambassador to Jordan, Pierre Christophe, affirmed that the digital risks associated with electronic games are no longer a local issue, but have become a global challenge requiring concerted efforts from various entities and institutions. He noted the importance of the step taken by Jordan in launching this campaign, commending the efforts made to promote digital awareness and protect children.

For his part, the Minister of Youth, Dr. Raed Al-Adwan, emphasized the importance of this campaign in raising awareness of digital risks. He noted that the Ministry is working with various national institutions to ensure a safe and supportive environment for young people and pointed out that this campaign aligns with several programs and projects implemented by the Ministry in the areas of digital awareness and youth empowerment.

Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, Sami Smeirat, affirmed that protecting children and youth in the digital environment has become a shared national responsibility requiring integrated roles among families, educational institutions, media outlets, government agencies, and technology platforms. He emphasized that digital transformation is not limited to providing technology and services but extends to building digital awareness that promotes the safe and responsible use of technology. Smeirat pointed out that the gaming and esports sector represents one of the promising sectors within the economic modernization vision, given the opportunities it offers for creativity, innovation, and youth empowerment. He also stressed the importance of enhancing digital safety and keeping pace with the challenges associated with digital content and electronic games, ensuring the protection of children and youth and fostering a safer and more informed digital environment.

In the same context, Lama Hattab, CEO of Generations For Peace, affirmed that the campaign seeks to build broader community awareness about how to interact safely in the digital space and to strengthen partnerships between institutions, parents, and youth to address the growing digital challenges, ensuring the protection of users and empowering them to benefit positively from technology and electronic games.

Through sport and the arts, the programme strengthens resilience, promotes stress management, and fosters peer support networks to ensure young people are equipped not only for employment, but also for life's broader challenges.
