Chinese Ambassador to Tonga Liu Weimin Meets with the New Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry, as well as Minister for Fisheries Hon. Viliami Sisifa

On January 8, 2026, Ambassador Liu Weimin met with Hon. Viliami Sisifa, Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry, as well as Minister for Fisheries of Tonga, and congratulated him on his new appointment. The two sides engaged in friendly exchanges on agricultural and fishery cooperation.

Ambassador Liu said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Tonga, bilateral relations have maintained a positive momentum of development, with cooperation in agriculture and fisheries continuously deepening. Chinese agricultural technology experts have been working diligently in Tonga for 16 years, and Chinese fishing enterprises have actively provided aquatic products to Tonga, which contributes tangibly to the improvement of local livelihoods. In November 2025, His Majesty King Tupou VI paid a successful state visit to China, where he highly evaluated the offshore fish farming and Juncao project. China stands ready to work with Tonga to actively implement the important outcomes of His Majesty's visit, and further deepen bilateral practical cooperation. Ambassador Liu also elaborated on the historical context of the Taiwan question and the one-China principle.

Hon. Viliami Sisifa expressed gratitude for China's long-term support and assistance to Tonga. He supported the one-China principle and expressed confidence in the prospect of China-Tonga cooperation. He also looked forward to visiting China at an appropriate time to conduct on-site inspections and expand cooperation space.
