Illinois Army National Guard Activates 217th Military Intelligence Battalion

Wheaton, Ill. -

The Illinois Army National Guard activated the 217th Military Intelligence Battalion during a ceremony on Oct 18, 2026, in Cantigny Park, Illinois, formally establishing a new organization designed to strengthen military intelligence and electronic warfare capabilities.

The ceremony included the activation of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Alpha Company, Bravo Company, Charlie Company and the 234th Electronic Warfare Company. Leaders also participated in assumption-of-command and assumption-of-responsibility ceremonies for the battalion and subordinate units while bringing together Soldiers, leaders, families and distinguished guests to recognize the battalion's activation and the assumption of command by its leadership teams.

The battalion's activation became effective Sept. 1, 2026, and the new unit will be based in the Illinois Army National Guard's Forest Park Armory. The ceremony formalized an organization developed through more than a year of planning, training and preparation.

Aligned under the 34th Infantry Division and the 58th Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade, the 217th Military Intelligence Battalion provides intelligence analysis, exploitation, targeting support and collection capabilities to support multidomain operations. The battalion consists of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Alpha Company, Bravo Company and Charlie Company, with the 234th Electronic Warfare Company also included in the ceremony.

"The activation of this intelligence electronic warfare battalion represents our military's deliberate choice to dominate the information environment and electromagnetic spectrum," said Col Jason Carter, commander of the 65th Troop Command Brigade.

During the ceremony, leaders uncased the battalion and company colors, symbolizing the formal activation of the organizations. The ceremony also included assumption-of-command and assumption-of-responsibility proceedings for the battalion and its subordinate companies.
The battalion's commander, Lt. Col. Aleida Gonzalez, emphasized the importance of building the organization through teamwork, professional development and a commitment to high standards.
"This unit brings opportunity through our training and a greater path towards career growth. If you are early in your career, this battalion is a place to grow. If you're in your mid-career, this is a place to lead," said Gonzalez.

The activation comes as the Army continues to adapt to an operational environment in which intelligence, information and electronic warfare capabilities play an increasingly important role. The battalion is designed to help commanders understand the battlefield, identify adversary capabilities and support informed operational decisions.

"Your ultimate purpose is not simply collecting data. It's enabling combat lethality, protecting American lives and winning the nation's wars," Carter said.

The ceremony also recognized the contributions of the Soldiers and full-time staff who helped establish the battalion, as well as the families whose support enabled continued military service.
With its activation complete, the 217th Military Intelligence Battalion begins its next chapter focused on building readiness, developing its Soldiers and establishing the standards that will define the organization for years to come.
