Cipher Digital (CIFR) is turning its bitcoin mining sites into data centers that it leases to technology companies. In fiscal Q2 2026, Cipher burned $654 million. That figure marks how far the cash left after running the business and paying for buildings and equipment fell below zero. The company has burned cash in each of the last four quarters. At this pace, how long do you think Cipher's cash would last?
How Fast Is Cipher Burning Cash?
In fiscal Q2 2026, Cipher burned nearly four times as much cash as it did in the same quarter a year earlier, and more than 26 times its sales for the quarter.
| Fiscal quarter | Sales | Cash the business brought in | Cash left after spending on buildings and equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 FY2025 (ended 2025-03-31) | $49.0 million | -$47.2 million | -$147 million |
| Q2 FY2025 (ended 2025-06-30) | $43.6 million | -$56.2 million | -$175 million |
| Q3 FY2025 (ended 2025-09-30) | $71.7 million | -$50.1 million | -$95.2 million |
| Q4 FY2025 (ended 2025-12-31) | $59.7 million | -$54.4 million | -$285 million |
| Q1 FY2026 (ended 2026-03-31) | $34.8 million | $91.5 million | -$462 million |
| Q2 FY2026 (ended 2026-06-30) | $24.8 million | -$244 million | -$654 million |
Each row is one fiscal quarter. A negative figure is cash going out. The last column is free cash flow.
Cipher burned about two and a half times as much cash over the last four quarters as it did in the four quarters before, so the burn is growing quickly. Spending on buildings and equipment accounted for about 63% of the latest quarter's burn. This capital went largely toward three data center campuses that management says are leased to technology companies.
How Long Would Cipher's Cash Last?
Cipher held $832 million in cash and short-term investments on June 30, 2026. If the company kept burning cash at the average pace of the last four quarters and raised nothing, that cash would last about two quarters from June 30, stretching into early 2027. At the latest quarter's pace, the June cash would last just over one quarter, to about late October 2026.
Neither count includes the $850 million of convertible notes Cipher priced on October 14, which were due to settle on October 16. Nor does either count include about $3.7 billion of restricted project cash. Management said most of it is reserved for construction, the same spending that made up about 63% of the latest quarter's burn. Cipher's debt was nearly seven times its unrestricted cash.
Who Has Paid For The Burn So Far?
Lenders have mostly paid for the burn. Cipher's debt climbed from $23.3 million on June 30, 2024, to about $5.59 billion two years later. Shareholders paid as well, because over the same two years Cipher's diluted share count rose 30.2%, and selling new shares leaves each existing share with a smaller piece of the company.
What Has To Change At Cipher
For the burn to shrink, Cipher's data centers have to start bringing in cash. On its August 4, 2026 call, management said rent had started at Black Pearl and that rental payments at Barber Lake were expected to begin in October. Cipher's November 2 report, which covers July to September, should show the first rent from Black Pearl. Management also said that, based on its current forecast, it did not expect to need more equity. That view came before Cipher priced $850 million of convertible notes on October 14.
Sales are still shrinking. They fell 43.0% in fiscal Q2 2026 from a year earlier, and management tied the drop from the prior quarter to the shutdown of bitcoin mining at Black Pearl. The cash Cipher burns each quarter, $654 million in fiscal Q2 2026, is the figure to watch when the company reports on November 2, 2026.
