Every two years, the Sioux City Art Center Biennial exhibition is a celebration of art, in all media, that captures the spirit and creative voices of artists living in Iowa and a 300-mile radius of Sioux City. This year's exhibition shows a powerful mix of emerging and established artists whose work reflects on movement, connection, and distance as they shape life in the region.
We invited Matthew Fluharty, Founder and Director of Art of the Rural to guest curate the exhibition. Over 115 artists submitted 350 artworks to the open call. When reflecting on the process, he said, "It was an honor to spend time with the work of the extraordinary artists who submitted entries for the Sioux City Art Center Biennial. The selected artists each contribute singular elements to the prismatic movement of perception, story, and relationships that animate the exhibition. They challenge and expand our sense of what's at stake when we move through the lands, histories, and communities of this region - whether we're walking through our neighborhood or driving to a distant town. These artists' work helps us see more clearly how we shape, and are shaped by, what is close at hand and what is on the horizon."
We extend our deepest gratitude to the artists who made the Biennial possible. We'd also like to thank Matthew Fluharty for his time and energy during the jurying process. We hope that this exhibition will leave you with a renewed sense of connection to our region and a newly found appreciation for the transformative power of art.
