The CBJ reports that a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) event has occurred at the Outer Drive Pump Station in Downtown Juneau along Egan Drive resulting in a brief combined wastewater and storm water discharge into the Gastineau Channel. The event occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. September 10, 2025 and lasted for approximately thirty minutes.
The discharge was due to sudden and heavy precipitation combined with a high tide (+18.9') that temporarily overwhelmed the antiquated Outer Drive (OD) wastewater pump station. The OD station is currently undergoing a major reconstruction and upgrade as part of the Utility's efforts to upgrade aging infrastructure. The reconstruction project is due to be completed within this month.
Environmental impacts are expected to be limited due to the short duration of the event and the dilute nature of the discharge. Once completed, the upgrades to the OD station will prevent this type of event from occurring in the future. CBJ has notified the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.
