Long Beach, CA - The Long Beach City Council recently approved with an 8 to 0 vote a 50-year lease agreement with Sky Harbour for a $60 million aeronautical development on approximately 17 acres at Long Beach Airport (LGB).
"Long Beach Airport is one of our City's most valuable economic assets, and this project will further strengthen its position as a hub for aviation activity, while also creating hundreds of local jobs," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "Sky Harbour's investment is a vote of confidence in Long Beach's future and our ongoing commitment to smart, sustainable development."
Following a competitive Request for Proposals process earlier this year, Sky Harbour, headquartered in White Plains, New York, was selected for its experience in aviation infrastructure development and its vision for creating best-in-class private hangar campuses.
Under the agreement, Sky Harbour plans to construct state-of-the-art aircraft hangars for corporate jet tenants, a terminal and office complex, onsite parking with electric vehicle charging stations and a publicly accessible, open-air restaurant. The development will repurpose a currently underutilized portion of the airfield, located on the west side of the Airport at the terminus of Wardlow Road. It will also support Long Beach's broader economic and sustainability goals, as the project is expected to create and retain approximately 650 local jobs through construction, direct employment, campus operations and related business services.
"This project represents a significant investment in Long Beach's future," said Fifth District Councilwoman Megan Kerr. "Sky Harbour's plans will bring new life to the west side of the Airport and create opportunities that benefit both aviation users and the surrounding community."
"Sky Harbour is proud to partner with Long Beach Airport and the City of Long Beach on this exciting new project," said Tal Keinan, Sky Harbour Chief Executive Officer. "Our team looks forward to investing in a facility that reflects the region's strong aviation heritage and economic vitality."
While the proposed Long Beach development will be subject to applicable environmental review and approvals, Sky Harbour operates similar aeronautical campuses across the country and is known for its commitment to high-quality, purpose-built facilities that serve both business and general aviation.
"Sky Harbour's proposal aligns well with our vision of innovative aeronautical development," said Airport Director Cynthia Guidry. "This development will modernize underutilized space and strengthen the Airport's position as an economic engine for the region."
The Sky Harbour development marks another milestone in Long Beach Airport's continued investment in its facilities, ensuring that the Airport remains a regional leader in aviation, innovation and economic opportunity.
