The Walker County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to purchase the old Family Dollar building in LaFayette in June 2023. Several ideas were floated at the time for its best use, before it was decided to relocate the Elections Office from the main courthouse to a standalone facility.
The new office, located at 311 S. Main Street in LaFayette, has space to accommodate early voting, as well as election day voting for the LaFayette precinct. In addition, there is space for training, testing and storage of election machines and improved accessibility for voters with ample parking and all services on one level.
"Overall, the new location enhances both the voter experience and our ability to administer elections accurately and transparently," said Danielle Montgomery, Director of Elections. "All equipment is now under one roof and the office features upgraded technology that will allow our staff to work more efficiently and securely."
The County held a ribbon cutting in February to mark the official opening of the new facility.
