Kentucky Resident Convicted of TennCare Fraud Related Theft of Service

NASHVILLE, TN - The Office of Inspector General (OIG) today announced the conviction of 48-year-old Emily Stevens of Fulton, Kentucky.

Ms. Stevens was convicted of one count of Theft of Services valued at $10,000 or more but less than $60,000, a Class C felony. Ms. Stevens failed to disclose to TennCare that she was no longer a Tennessee resident and, therefore, no longer eligible for TennCare benefits.

Ms. Stevens was sentenced to three years of supervised probation through the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) and ordered to pay court costs and restitution totaling $36,011.59.

Ms. Stevens's case was prosecuted by Obion County District Attorney General Colin Johnson, with assistance from Assistant District Attorney Jerald M. Campbell.

"It is extremely important that TennCare recipients provide accurate and updated information when applying for and receiving benefits, not only to protect the integrity of the TennCare program but also to avoid potential criminal prosecution," said Inspector General Chad D. Holman. "The cost of fraudulent receipt of TennCare benefits impacts all Tennessee taxpayers, and the OIG is committed to protecting the TennCare program for those who truly qualify."

Through the OIG Cash for Tips Program established by the TN Legislature, Tennesseans may qualify for cash rewards for TennCare fraud tips that lead to a conviction.
