Help Keep Waterways Clean and Debris-Free

September 12, 2025 - As Midland moves into autumn, the City of Midland reminds residents to help keep our local waterways clean and free of trash and pollutants.

In addition to being a violation of the City's Code of Ordinances, dumping materials into waterways has the potential to harm the environment and increases the likelihood of overland flooding during rain or snow events.

Here are some tips for keeping our waterways flowing in tip-top shape:

  • Keep grass clippings and branches from accumulating in ditches or streams on or near your property.
  • If you observe any waterways adjacent to your property that are filled with sediment, vegetation, and/or debris, contact the City's Water Reclamation Department at 989-837-3500 and a crew will be sent to assess the condition of that area.
  • If you see someone dumping debris into ditches or streams, call 911 to report it.
  • While City crews clear off street drains (catch basins) on a periodic basis, leaves, brush, snow, ice, and debris can quickly accumulate between maintenance visits. Periodically check and clear the catch basins near your property to ensure proper water drainage at all times.

For flood safety and Midland floodplain information, contact the City of Midland Planning Department at 989-837-3374. For information on catch basin maintenance, contact the Department of Public Works at 989-837-6900.
