EU Leaders at the 80th UN General Assembly: an unwavering commitment to effective multilateralism

A high-level delegation of the European Union (EU) leaders will participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York from 21-30 September. The focus of EU engagement will be to uphold the rules and principles of the UN Charter, including those of sovereignty and territorial integrity, political independence and self-determination.

The delegation to the 79th session will include President of the European Council António Costa, who will address the UN General Assembly on behalf of the EU on 25 September and will speak at the UN Security Council on 24 September.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, EU High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas, together with the President of the European Council António Costa, will host or participate in events and meetings with leaders from around the world.

They will be joined by Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera, and Commissioners Dubravka Šuica, Wopke Hoekstra, Jozef Síkela, Hadja Lahbib, Magnus Brunner, Jessika Roswall, Dan Jørgensen, and Glenn Micallef.

This EU leadership team will represent the Union at the UN-mandated high-level meetings.

The EU will host or co-host several flagship events in the margins of the General Assembly. EU representatives will have a full agenda of high-level debates and side events, as well as numerous bilateral meetings. The delegation will also include EU Youth Delegate Veronika Novotná, will represent youth at the commemorative High Level event on the 30th anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth.

The President of the European Council, together with the President of the European Commission and the EU High Representative/Vice-President, will participate in the traditional EU-UN principals meeting and the EU-UN-African Union trilateral on Sunday, 21 September and will take part in a series of side events and bilateral meetings.

The President of the European Council, together with the President of the European Commission and the EU High Representative/Vice-President, will take part in the high-level commemorative meeting of the UN General Assembly, marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations on Monday 22 September. The President of the European Commission will deliver a speech at the Global Renewables Summit.

In the afternoon of Monday 22 September, EU High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas will host an informal meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers.

On Tuesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas, together with the President of the European Council António Costa, will join the opening of the 80th UN General Assembly.

On Wednesday, EU High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas co-host an informal meeting of EU and Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Ministers, together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia (CELAC Chair).

On Thursday, EU High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas will address the opening session of the G20 High-Level Ministerial Meeting, which will take place under the theme of "The UN at 80 years: Reaffirming Peace as a path to sustainable economic development".
