Dell’s Multiple Falls On Servers It Cannot Build Fast Enough

The forward valuation looks like a discount, but what closes it is low-margin server volume, and consensus already sits above what management guided.

Dell Technologies (DELL) has returned 258.5% over the past twelve months. A run like that leaves a stock looking expensive, and at roughly 35.5 times trailing adjusted earnings it does. The forward arithmetic disagrees, and what closes the gap is not a cheaper stock but a particular kind of growth.

The Multiple Is 40% Lower By Fiscal 2028

Analysts expect enough growth from those adjusted, non-GAAP earnings that the same price is about 24.5 times fiscal 2027 and 21.4 times fiscal 2028, a 40% lower multiple with no help from the price. One caveat: the trailing figure adds stock-based compensation back to normalized income to sit nearer the consensus basis, but the two adjusted measures are not defined identically, so part of the fall is definition, not earnings.

AI Servers Bring The Growth At A Lower Target Margin

Consensus needs earnings growing about 33.7% a year from the trailing twelve months to fiscal 2028. Most of that comes from margin expansion in the nearer term: from the trailing twelve months to fiscal 2027, earnings are expected to outgrow revenue. From fiscal 2027 to fiscal 2028, though, earnings and revenue are expected to move at a similar pace, so margins are assumed to hold flat, not climb further. The growth arrives as AI servers, for which management targets a mid-single-digit operating income rate, below the 10.5% ISG, the server and storage business, delivered in fiscal Q1 2027. That ISG rate was up 80 basis points even as AI servers grew nearly 800% year over year; scale has kept the company's margin up so far.

Consensus, however, assumes that dynamic doesn't continue: it's modeling flat margins from here, not further expansion, as AI servers become a larger share of the mix. The full-year outlook leans the same way, asking ISG to grow roughly 80% on $60 billion of AI server revenue at the midpoint, while CSG, the PC business, grows low teens. Growth concentrated in one build-out is a different proposition from the Trefis High Quality Portfolio, which does not depend on the handful of largest technology names to produce its returns.

Consensus Asks For Less Growth Than Dell Delivered, And More Profit Than Dell Guided

The forecast is not aggressive. Revenue grew 38.6% over the trailing twelve months, while consensus averages about 25.6% a year from there through fiscal 2028. Where consensus reaches is on profit: analysts carry about $18.89 a share for fiscal 2027, above the $17.90, plus or minus $0.25, that management guided on its own non-GAAP basis at the fiscal Q1 2027 call. The limit is not the order book: Dell exited fiscal Q1 2027 with a record $51.3 billion of AI backlog. Management has said it is supply constrained in the back half of fiscal 2027, not demand constrained, with DRAM, NAND and CPUs the parts it is chasing.

If Consensus Lands, A 7% Payoff Against A 46% Shock Drawdown

Suppose consensus is right and the multiple settles around 23.0 times fiscal 2028 earnings, roughly halfway between the fiscal 2027 multiple and the fiscal 2028 multiple. The stock would then be worth about 7% more than today's price. If the price stands still, you simply learn you were not overpaying. Against that: the stock has fallen as much as 46% peak to trough in past market shocks, and the fiscal 2028 estimate rests on eight analysts spanning $19.37 to $28.1 a share. The compression is real; the reward for the central case is modest, and the wager, on management's telling, is on parts arriving rather than customers appearing. What to watch: whether a raised outlook keeps turning into price.

What A Stock Is Worth And How Much To Own Are Different Questions

Valuation says what a stock might be worth. It says nothing about how much of your wealth should ride on it. Concentration tends to arrive by accident rather than by decision. What your largest position would do to your net worth is exactly what the Trefis Wealth team computes, with the same rules-based systematic discipline that runs our High Quality Portfolio.
