Sixth Class of Purple Star Award Recipients Announced

Charleston, W.Va. - The West Virginia Department of Education and the Common Ground Partnership announced the recipients of the Purple Star Award. This prestigious award recognizes schools and districts that actively support the unique needs of students of military families. They provide an engaging and encouraging environment where students can succeed in the classroom and feel ease and attachment in their community.

This year, 74 schools successfully received the Purple Star Award as part of the sixth class (2025-2028). This brings the total to 319 Purple Star schools in the Mountain State. Boone County also earned 100% Purple Star participation and is newly recognized as a Purple Star District. Berkeley, Greenbrier, Lewis, McDowell and Morgan counties renewed their status as Purple Star Districts, bringing the total number to 18.

"Recognizing Purple Star recipients celebrates the commitment and support demonstrated by our school communities to ensure students have opportunities to succeed," said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. "It is vital we work to address the unique challenges of all students and provide them with the tools needed for classroom achievement and beyond."

The Common Ground Partnership consists of military, government and community-based organizations that support the success of all students while also focusing on the needs of military-connected students who often experience unique circumstances and stressors due to the unpredictable nature of military deployments. The Common Ground Partnership recognizes the importance of schools supporting students and ensuring they know the exceptional resources available to receive a high-quality education.
