The long-awaited unveiling of a dramatically improved Herman Massey Park has arrived.

The goal was to transform the 21,000-square-foot urban park into a vibrant, safe, and popular gathering space. The $2 million project was funded by the Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and is within the Downtown CRA boundaries.

"The reopening of Herman Massey Park reflects countless hours of thoughtful planning, dedicated effort, and meaningful community input," CRA Chairman Luis Viera said. "From concept to completion, every decision was guided by the needs and voices of our residents. We are proud to unveil a space designed for all ages, abilities, and interests-a true community treasure for everyone to enjoy."

Renovations and upgrades included:

  • A 3,200-square-foot raised deck, which has moveable furniture and was designed to preserve seven existing live oaks.
  • An improved dog park, with artificial turf and other durable surfaces.
  • A sculpture by Cuban-born artist Alexandre Arrechea that speaks to the relationship between old and new architecture, with a nod to the nearby historic landmark, the Tampa Theatre.

The Tampa CRA aims to enhance and develop communities by creating thriving and inclusive neighborhoods that enhance quality of life and foster economic growth. Tax Increment Financing is key. It requires that certain tax dollars raised in a CRA boundary area must be spent only in the area in which they are generated.
