PHOTOS: Capito Makes Educational Development Stops in Nicholas County

RICHWOOD, W.Va. - Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, traveled to Nicholas County, W.Va., to make visits focused on educational development in the County.

First, Senator Capito traveled to Summersville, W.Va., where she visited Nicholas County Adult Education to meet with leadership and tour the facility. The CTE, GED, CNA, and other certification programs offered by the school provide those looking to further their education with the skills, guidance, and training needed to be successful in their careers. While there, Senator Capito was honored to learn of being the recipient of the National Association for the Transformation of Adult Education's (NAFTAE) Legacy Leader of Adult Education Award for her work to support adult learners and strengthen adult education.

"It's great to be in Summersville today with Nicholas County Adult Education leadership and faculty to learn more about their work to expand opportunities for adults continuing their education. These programs play an important role in helping West Virginians gain the skills they need to succeed and strengthen our workforce," Senator Capito said. "Programs like these are foundational in our pursuit of the American Dream, ensuring a better and brighter future for our state's economic growth and job opportunities. I'm proud to support Nicholas County Adult Education and invest in this facility to help support West Virginia's workforce."

Next, Senator Capito traveled to Richwood, W.Va., to meet with local education leaders, tour Richwood Elementary, Middle, and High Schools, and receive an update on the schools' progress since reopening last year. Senator Capito was instrumental in securing FEMA funding to rebuild the schools in the wake of the 2016 floods through her work on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

"It was great to be back in Richwood to receive updates on the schools' progress since reopening last year. I was proud to use my role on the Senate Appropriations Committee to fight alongside local leaders to keep our students in Richwood and build these schools," Senator Capito said. "The education of our children is a top priority, and it was great to see the schools back in full swing for the fall semester. I am so proud of what Nicholas County's leadership has been able to accomplish in recent years and their steadfast commitment to providing students with the education they deserve."

"Nicholas County appreciates Senator Capito visiting the PK-12 Richwood Academic Complex. Her work to secure and release FEMA funds played an important role in getting these schools up and running for our students, teachers, and the entire community," Scott Cochran, Superintendent of Nicholas County Schools, said.
