Hoyer Statement on the End of the Republican Shutdown

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement at the end of the Republican shutdown:

"At the core of this Republican shutdown was the false premise that Congress could either reopen the government or provide for the health of the American people. Congress could have and should have done both. Instead, the GOP sent the same message to the American people over the 42 days of the shutdown that it has been sending them for the past half century: you're on your own.

"As the government reopens, I want to thank our federal workers for their strength. I have met with many of you during the shutdown - at rallies, at roundtables, and in line at food banks. Whether you were furloughed or forced to work without pay, I know this shutdown put tremendous strain on you and your families. Donald Trump, Russell Vought, and the rest of their administration's longstanding effort to put you 'in trauma' is sickening. Please know that I will always advocate for you on Capitol Hill.

"I have always believed that shutting down the government is a harmful policy. It hurts our federal workers, disrupts the services they provide the American people, and undermines national and international security.

"That Donald Trump and his MAGA majorities in Congress resorted to a shutdown rather than protect Americans' access to affordable health care was particularly cruel. Their refusal to extend premium tax credits for the Affordable Care Act will cause millions of Americans to see the cost of their care explode like never before. Many won't be able to afford any coverage.

"As we work to complete our Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations these next 78 days, I will push this Congress to do what it should have done at the start: both fund the government and protect Americans' health care."
