Minority Leader Harold Jones II Mourns the Passing of U.S. Representative David Scott

ATLANTA (April 22, 2026) - Today, Minority Leader Sen. Harold Jones II (D-Augusta) issued the following statement on the passing of U.S. Representative David Scott:

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Congressman David Scott, a trailblazer, statesman and lifelong public servant whose impact on Georgia and our nation will be felt for generations.

Congressman Scott's career was defined by decades of dedicated service, beginning in the Georgia General Assembly in 1974 and continuing for nearly 20 years in the Georgia State Senate, where he served as Rules Chairman and helped shape the institution through steady leadership and a deep respect for the legislative process. He carried that same commitment to Congress, where he represented Georgia's Thirteenth Congressional District and rose to serve as Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, becoming a leading voice on behalf of farmers, working families and communities across this country.

Throughout his life, Congressman Scott stood firmly for civil rights and justice. At a time when many chose silence, he confronted domestic extremism with courage and conviction, setting an example that continues to resonate today. He was a bridge builder who understood that progress requires both principle and persistence.

His work touched nearly every corner of public life, from expanding access to healthcare and education to strengthening support for veterans to advancing economic opportunity for families in Georgia and beyond. Whether in Atlanta or in DC, he never lost sight of the people he served.

On behalf of the Georgia Senate Democratic Caucus, I extend my deepest condolences to his wife, Alfredia, his family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We honor a life of purpose, service and unwavering faith.

Congressman David Scott leaves behind a legacy that will endure in the laws he helped pass, the communities he strengthened and the lives he changed."
