Representative Nicole La Ha continues work to prevent human trafficking

January 9, 2026

The month of January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month, and here in Illinois, State Representative Nicole La Ha continues her efforts to end this horrific crime.

"Ending human trafficking requires collaboration between lawmakers, law enforcement, survivors, and communities. I look forward to the work ahead in 2026," said Rep. La Ha. "Since my time in the Illinois General Assembly began, I have made combatting human trafficking a central part of my legislative agenda."

Among the legislative proposals sponsored and supported by Representative La Ha have been:

  • Removing the statute of limitations for prosecuting human trafficking cases when the victim was under 18. (HB 1114, La Ha language adopted into Public Act 104-241)
  • Eliminating affirmative defenses for those who patronize minors in prostitution and allowing victims to expunge records of offenses committed because of being trafficked. (HB 1467)
  • Amending the Sex Offender Registration Act to include convictions for trafficking and involuntary servitude. (HB 1469)
  • Creates the Human Trafficking Order of Protection Act to enable victims to obtain protection orders against traffickers. (HB 5469- 103rd GA)

Representative La Ha has repeatedly urged bipartisan support for these bills addressing human trafficking, emphasizing that the fight is not a political issue, but rather one of human rights.

"I cannot let Human Trafficking Prevention Month pass without acknowledging advocates, first responders, and survivors- many of whom are brave enough to share their stories. You matter and so does your story," said La Ha.
