More opportunities to explore Colorado Springs' trails are available this fall for people with mobility impairments, including trackchair hikes at two locations being offered for the first time: Stratton Open Space and Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site. Reservations are also available at Ute Valley Park, Blodgett Open Space, Red Rock Canyon Open Space and Bluestem Prairie Open Space, with opportunities running from Sept. 30 through Oct. 31.
Morning and afternoon sessions give participants the opportunity to experience trails using all-terrain, motorized trackchairs designed to navigate terrain that may not be accessible with a traditional wheelchair.
"One of the best things about this program is seeing someone experience a trail or explore one of our open spaces in a way they may not have thought was possible," said Regional Parks Manager Scott Abbott. "A trackchair can open up a whole new kind of outdoor experience, and we want people who could benefit from one to know these opportunities are here for them."
Guided trackchair hikes are scheduled at the following locations:
Morning sessions are offered from 8-11 a.m., with afternoon sessions from noon-3 p.m. Availability varies by date and session.
Participation is free, but advance registration is required. Participants can view available sessions, register or join a waitlist for a full session by visiting ColoradoSprings.gov/TrackChair.
The trackchair program is part of the City's ongoing work to expand access to outdoor recreation and provide opportunities for people of varying abilities to experience Colorado Springs' parks, trails and open spaces.
