For the second time since April, service on the MBTA's Green Line B branch, which traverses Boston University's Charles River Campus, will shut down in August-twice-for infrastructure improvements. Service also will be suspended on other Green Line branches.

The transit system's website announced the following dates and service interruptions:

  • During the weekend of August 1 and 2, service will be suspended between Government Center and Babcock Street on the B branch, Government Center and Kenmore Square on the C branch, North Station and Kenmore on the D branch, and Heath Street and North Station on the E branch.
  • From August 8 through August 16, service will be suspended between Government Center and Babcock Street on the B branch, Government Center and Cleveland Circle on the C branch, North Station and Kenmore on the D branch, and Heath Street and North Station on the E branch.

During both shutdowns, the MBTA says, B branch riders can use free, accessible shuttle buses between Babcock Street and Back Bay. The system won't charge fares at surface-level stops between Babcock Street and Boston College. The Route 57 bus along Comm Ave. also will run fare-free.

C and D branch riders can use free, accessible shuttle buses between Kenmore and Back Bay. Fares at Kenmore will be free, with the fare gates open.

Additionally, the T says that during the closures, riders can connect to the Orange Line at Back Bay for continued service through downtown Boston toward North Station.

The MBTA says the interruptions are needed "to support Green Line tunnel signal upgrades" as well as "accessibility improvements on the Green Line C branch and at Symphony [Hall stop]."

The Green Line E branch services the Boston VA Medical Center, an affiliate of BU's Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.

Other work will interrupt service in August on the Orange Line, Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail Line, and the Needham Commuter Rail Line. Information on the dates of those disruptions and accommodation for passengers during the work is here.
