New York signs up for more nuclear

New York is going after nuclear in a big way. The New York Power Authority is releasing its first solicitations for plans to develop advanced nuclear reactors in the state's upstate communities, the power authority announced on October 30.

It's part of New York Gov. Kathy Hochul's long-term plan to develop at least one gigawatt of new nuclear power in upstate New York, which she announced this past June, as Nuclear Newswire covered.

Request it, and they will come: The New York Power Authority's two solicitations are requesting information for upstate New York communities that want to host advance nuclear reactor projects.

The first RFI is geared toward developer/partners who want to support the NYPA's advanced nuclear power projects. The RFI asks for them to provide viable project concepts that include technology, siting considerations, cost and timeline assumptions, and ownership structure and partnership to help NYPA reach its goal of one gigawatt of nuclear power no later than 2040.

The second RFI is directed toward communities in upstate New York to get their input as to whether they have sites that could host nuclear power as well as have backers and a vision for how advanced nuclear reactors could support the local economy.
