As part of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the University of Barcelona, through the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) of the Solidarity Foundation, is organizing the event Auschwitz and the construction of European memory, an academic gathering open to the university community and the general public.
The event will take place on 20 January, at 6.30 p.m., in the Ramón y Cajal lecture room. Among the participants will be Piotr Cywiński, director of Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, and Danuta Glondys, who as a child saw the creation of the Memorial, where her mother worked. She is also the former city councillor for Culture in Kraków and former director of Villa Decius.
The session will include an opening lecture on the origins and significance of the Auschwitz Memorial, followed by a discussion focused on the contemporary challenges of memory policies, historical responsibility, and the relationship between traumatic pasts, human rights, and present-day violence. The debate will be chaired by journalist Teresa Turiera-Puigbó.
