Cassidy Advances Senate Legislation to Make Housing More Affordable, Secures Three Key Louisiana Priorities

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) issued the following statement after voting for the Renewing Opportunity in the American Dream (ROAD) to Housing Act. The package includes Cassidy's priorities to support veterans, boost disaster recovery, and make housing affordable again. All are major Louisiana priorities that Cassidy worked to secure.

"Families are working hard, doing everything right, and still can't afford a home," said Dr. Cassidy. "The wins I helped secure in this bill help make that dream of homeownership achievable."

Provisions Cassidy helped champion for Louisiana in the ROAD to Housing Act:

  • Legislation to fix a broken disaster recovery system that has left Louisiana families waiting too long for help. The legislation strengthens HUD's disaster recovery grants, improves federal coordination, and establishes a dedicated office to ensure communities can rebuild faster and stronger.
  • Legislation to ensure disabled veterans' benefits don't count against them when applying for housing assistance. The legislation includes provisions to support other related housing needs.
  • Legislation to unlock additional private capital for affordable housing and community development in rural Louisiana communities. This legislation is market-driven, deregulatory, and directly beneficial to the state.
