Kingshighway now open to two-way traffic over I-44 in Rolla

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Morning commuters in Rolla were able to use both the east and westbound lanes of traffic on Route 72 (Kingshighway) over I-44 at Exit 184. After completing more extensive repairs than originally planned, contractor crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation were able to reopen the Kingshighway Bridge to two-way traffic late Tuesday night, Oct. 6, following a rehabilitation project.

The Kingshighway Bridge, like others in this multi-bridge bundle, is a voided slab bridge. Unlike a bridge where the bridge deck, or driving surface, is placed on top of girders, the girder-like structures are inside the concrete that makes up the bridge deck. When contractors opened up the concrete on the Kingshighway project, which began in March, they found more extensive repairs were needed than originally anticipated. This extended the scope of the project and moved the expected completion of the project from the end of August to early October.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $3,948,366.99 contract for this six-bridge project to Concrete Strategies, LLC. Other than minor work, all bridges are now complete. Any remaining work at these bridges is expected to have little impact to traffic.
