WASHINGTON - Today, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia issued a preliminary injunction barring the White House from enforcing its press access ban against CNN, MS NOW, and Politico. In issuing the injunction, Judge Kelly highlighted the administration's retaliatory intent, stating that President Trump's own comments suggest that he intended for the revocation of the outlets' access to the White House to change their reporting to be more favorable to him.
The Association strongly supports the court's decision to uphold constitutional protections, particularly the First Amendment freedom of the press and the public's right to receive information.
Kristen Clarke, General Counsel for the NAACP, issued the following statement:
"President Trump's press ban is inherently unconstitutional and flies in the face of bedrock First Amendment principles. The ban also comes just weeks before the close of a midterm election cycle and at a time when Americans across the country are seeking more information about the role that White House policy plays on issues like gas prices, affordability, health care, tariffs and more. The NAACP has always relied on a free and unfiltered press to access real information about activity inside the 'People's House.'"
The NAACP remains steadfast in fighting for government transparency and holding power accountable on critical issues impacting Black communities across the nation. In a democracy, no leader is above the law, and the NAACP will continue to speak out against unconstitutional actions wherever they occur.
