OSHA Committee Summer Weather Reminder

Summer usually means sunshine and warm weather, but the season can also bring periods of extreme heat. Many parts of our country have already experienced heat waves and record-breaking temperatures.

Heat exposure can cause illness or even death - Just because you work indoors does not mean you are not at risk. Luckily, there are standards in place dictating what makes a safe working environment. The Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970 requires employers to provide a workplace "free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm." Heat is a recognized hazard, and OSHA has used the General Duty Clause to issue heat citations. NATCA's CBAs include articles stating bargaining unit employees' right to work in a safe and comfortable environment. FAA has also outlined its standards in Joint Order 3900.76.
