He knew our community well, not only from the many years of calls to every part of the city. He graduated from Tempe High School in 1990.

"The loss of Firefighter Paramedic Garza is felt deeply throughout our department and community. John was the kind of person whose smile could light up a room. His sense of humor made even the toughest days a little easier. He always put others first and embodying the very best of what it means to be a public servant. His commitment to Tempe was a calling, and he answered it with courage, compassion and humility," said Interim Fire Chief Darrell Duty.

He is survived by his wife, Liana Garza, and two children, Johnny and Maya. Details for services are forthcoming.
