Congressional Ukraine Caucus Statement on Ukrainian Unity DayPress Release

Washington, DC - Today, Co-Chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Ukraine Caucus, Representatives Marcy Kaptur (D-OH-09), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-01), Mike Quigley (D-IL-05), and Joe Wilson (R-SC-02), issued the following statement in recognition of Ukrainian Unity Day:
"Today, we mark Ukrainian Unity Day, honoring a nation whose unity is inseparable from its commitment to democratic self-government, cultural identity, and national dignity.
"As Ukraine enters its fourth year of full-scale invasion-following Russia's initial invasion in 2014-it stands as a global symbol of democratic resilience under extraordinary pressure. During our visits to Kyiv and communities across Ukraine, we witnessed not only the hardship of war, but the determination of a people confronting an effort to erase them as a distinct nation-through attacks on civilians, critical infrastructure, language, history, and culture. These experiences left a lasting impression on each of us.
"This year carries added meaning as Americans prepare to commemorate 250 years of our own democracy. Ukraine's struggle is a reminder that democracy is not simply about institutions or borders, but about a people's right to exist freely, self-govern, and preserve their culture and identity. That right is being tested daily, yet it endures.
"The 1919 Act of Ukrainian Unification affirmed the their people's aspiration to live as one sovereign nation. More than a century later, that aspiration remains alive in the resilience of families, the perseverance of communities through cold and darkness, and the preservation of Ukrainian language, traditions, and culture even during wartime.
"On Ukrainian Unity Day, our bipartisan Ukraine Caucus honors the endurance of the Ukrainian people and the unbreakable link between unity, democracy, and cultural survival."
