Providence, R.I. - U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, the top Democrat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, this morning cheered the announcement by Orsted that the Revolution Wind Project connected its first power onto Rhode Island's power grid last night.
"Clean, affordable energy from Revolution Wind is officially on the grid. When Rhode Island families pay their utility bills, they will be grateful to Orsted and the resilient union workers who got this project over the finish line. Power from Revolution Wind will make our grid more reliable in the winter and reduce Rhode Islanders' energy costs for years to come," said Whitehouse.
The Revolution Wind Project has employed more than 1,000 local union workers and completed more than 2 million union work hours. The project underpins nearly $1.3 billion in state investment, new shipbuilding jobs, and critical upgrades to Rhode Island's ports, shipyards, and supply chain. Revolution Wind is expected to lower New England regional wholesale energy prices right away. President Trump made two attempts to stop construction of the Revolution Wind project last year. Both efforts were overturned in federal court.
Finalizing construction on current offshore wind projects is one of the fastest ways to get more electrons on the grid. But as payback to Trump's fossil fuel backers, the Trump Administration has repeatedly weaponized federal bureaucracy to try and kill clean energy projects that will save Americans money and reduce the carbon pollution that is driving the climate crisis.
