The following statement on the Great American Artificial Intelligence Act can be attributed to Paul Lekas, Executive Vice President, Global Public Policy and Government Affairs.
SIIA commends Reps. Jay Obernolte (R-CA), Lori Trahan (D-MA), Scott Franklin (R-FL), Erin Houchin (R-IN), Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA), and Scott Peters (D-CA) on the release of the Great American Artificial Intelligence Act discussion draft. This extensive draft should further efforts to enact meaningful, bipartisan legislation to strengthen American AI innovation and address security and safety concerns. The draft integrates many key concepts that SIIA supports, including codification of the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI); a framework for federal government oversight of frontier models; programs to support AI literacy, workforce research, and workforce support; cybersecurity enhancements, including reauthorization of the Cybersecurity Act of 2015; augmentations to federally-support research through access to federal data, a new AI testbed program, and codification of the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR); and support for industry's efforts to advance international AI standards. SIIA looks forward to working closely with the sponsors on refining this legislation to ensure it promotes continued AI innovation, U.S. leadership, and public trust in AI.
