Buy Or Sell GEO Group Stock Before The Midterms

Part of our midterms guide. Start here: what the vote really changes for your money.

On November 6, 2024, the day after Donald Trump won, shares of private-prison operator GEO Group jumped about 42%. Few stocks are so tied to one policy. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is its biggest customer, about half of revenue.

The number
Share of GEO revenue from ICE about 48%
Move the day after the 2024 election about +42%
ICE detention money in the 2025 budget law about $45B, spread over several years
Chance Democrats win the House on Tuesday about 94%

The money is already appropriated. The mood isn't.

A Democratic House can't claw back money Congress already approved without a law Trump would sign. So the cash keeps flowing. What a Democratic House can do is investigate, hold hearings, and fight over future budgets. That can move a stock long before it moves revenue.

Some of the biggest swings came from policy headlines: the 2024 election (+42%); the January 2021 order ending federal Justice Department contracts with private prisons (−8% that day); ICE's reported plan to consolidate detention in February 2026 (−13% that day).

The Case For A 30% Drop

A stock that rose on one election can fall on the next. If Democrats sweep, investors may assume ICE's growth has peaked: more oversight, tighter future budgets, and contracts that become politically harder to sign. The stock is priced for growth in detention, not just steady revenue. And Democrats are expected to investigate "companies that have done business with the Trump administration."

The Case Against

The 2025 law already put tens of billions toward detention, and that money runs for years. Contracts are signed by the executive branch, which doesn't change on Tuesday. And a Democratic House is almost fully expected, so some of the bad news is already in the price.

GEO shows how one policy can swing a stock 30% or more in a day. Most families don't hold GEO, but many hold a few stocks tied to one theme: AI, defense, health care. If you have $1 million or more, a Trefis partner firm can show you how much rides on one policy.

A big swing is likely. A lasting 30% loss isn't. A sharp move on Wednesday is plausible, because this stock trades on headlines. But the money that pays GEO is already approved for years, so the business changes far less than the mood.

The other side of the trade: 3 Stocks That Could Pop If Democrats Win.
