Whitney, Beyoncé & More: Dolly Parton’s Legacy Beyond Country

She Changed The Name Of Her Dixie Stampede Show

Dolly Parton's long-running dinner theater attraction was once called Dixie Stampede, a name that had drawn criticism over its associations with the Confederacy and the antebellum South.

In 2018, Parton renamed the attraction Dolly Parton's Stampede, removing "Dixie" from the title.

Parton said at the time that she did not want to offend anyone and that she believed the name had become a distraction from the show itself.

"When they said 'Dixie' was an offensive word, I thought, 'Well, I don't want to offend anybody,'" she admitted.

Parton later said the original name came from "innocent ignorance" and that once she understood why it was offensive, she believed changing it was the right thing to do.

The attraction continues to operate today in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, as Dolly Parton's Stampede, according to Dollywood.

Her Legacy Crossed Cultural Lines

Parton's relationship with Black culture cannot be reduced to a handful of collaborations or public statements. But her career offers a striking example of how music can move across racial and genre boundaries.

Her legacy may be rooted in country music, but it was never confined to it. Her collaborations with Black artists, support for racial justice and investment in a Black Nashville community are also part of the story she leaves behind.
