How has being a GEAPS member helped you grow?

Being a GEAPS member has given me opportunities to learn and grow through both education and networking. I've worked my way through the education programs myself and now encourage my employees to take GEAPS courses as well. I believe that the better educated and informed we are, the safer and more efficient our teams can be. On top of that, the connections I've made at Exchange and local chapter events have been invaluable.

Favorite part about working in the grain industry:

My favorite part is that no two days are the same. One day I might be working with a country elevator, and the next day I could be at a large export facility. The variety keeps the work interesting and exciting-there's no redundancy in what we do.

Unique fact about your facility:

What makes The Delong Company unique is how diversified we are across the grain industry. We're involved with country elevators, container loaders, rail loaders, and ship loading facilities. That wide reach allows us to work across many different segments of the industry.

Biggest influence on your career:

The biggest influence on my career has been The DeLong Company. They've supported me with opportunities to keep learning and growing, including encouraging my GEAPS involvement. Pat DeLong, in particular, connected me with GEAPS for the first time, which really set me on this path.

What is an industry-wide trend affecting your company right now?

Like the rest of the industry, we're experiencing a major workforce shift as many veteran operators retire. These were people with decades of knowledge and hands-on experience, and it's not easy to replace that. Younger employees coming in don't yet have that knowledge base, but GEAPS education and networking opportunities are helping bridge the gap. Programs like these will be critical for developing the next generation of industry leaders. If you want to be successful and grow your career, being a GEAPS member is the way to go.
