August in Brentwood brought warm summer days, back-to-school energy, and many opportunities to connect. The Concerts in the Park series wrapped up with attendance surpassing previous years, while other events throughout the month included the Tiny Tot Triathlon, National Night Out, Meet the Chief, and City staff at the Farmers' Market. These events provided opportunities for City staff to connect with community members of all ages.

Root Beer Float Day was a great example of how employee-led ideas can strengthen the City's workplace culture.
Staff from departments across the City gathered to enjoy a float, cool off, and connect with one another. These moments, simple, fun, and collaborative, help build the relationships that make our City stronger.
Thank you to the employees who recommended this event and to everyone who participated. Engagement grows when people feel empowered to shape their workplace, and this was a perfect example.

The City is truly lucky to have employees who bring their authentic selves to work, including their school spirit. In recognition of school starting this month for many, the City hosted School Spirit Day. This event was more than just jerseys, colors, and mascots. It was a reminder of how much pride, personality, and connection our staff bring to this organization.
Moments like these matter. They spark conversations, create new connections, and remind us that we're part of something bigger than our daily tasks. When staff participate with this level of energy, it strengthens the work culture and makes the workplace feel more like a community.

UPDATE ON SHADOW LAKES FLOCK CAMERAS
|
|
|
|
|
The Shadow Lakes cameras were installed within the public right-of-way, which requires an encroachment permit. The City initiated the process to revoke the permit associated with these installations.
As a result, six Flock cameras have been removed from the Shadow Lakes community.
City staff continue to conduct field verifications and review permit records for any other HOA or private-party Flock camera installations within the public right-of-way. Cameras located entirely on private property do not require an encroachment permit. The City's current review is focused specifically on private-party cameras and related equipment installed within the public right-of-way. Cameras installed by the Brentwood Police Department are not under review or subject to removal.

On August 22, the Brentwood Police Department welcomed community members for its Meet the Chief event, bringing residents and department staff together for an afternoon of conversation, connection, and a behind-the-scenes look at the department.
Guests had the opportunity to meet the Chief, ask questions, tour the station, and get to know the officers and staff who serve the Brentwood community each day.

National Night Out 2026 brought Brentwood residents, neighbors, and police officers together for an evening of community connection.
Throughout the event, officers visited neighborhood gatherings, spoke with residents, and joined in a variety of activities. The evening provided a relaxed and welcoming opportunity for community members to get to know Brentwood Police officers and strengthen connections across the city.

FOCUSED ENFORCEMENT OPERATION TARGETING UNLAWFUL USE OF DISABLED PARKING SPACES

|
|
On July 21, the Brentwood Police Department Motor Officers, Community Service Officers (CSOs), and School Resource Officers (SROs) conducted a focused enforcement operation targeting the unlawful use of disabled parking spaces throughout our community.
During the operation, officers and staff issued 66 citations and made 5 arrests.
Accessible parking spaces are reserved for individuals who rely on them due to their limited mobility. Misusing a disabled parking space or placard isn't just against the law, it also takes away access from those who truly need it.
Thank you to everyone who follows the law and helps keep these spaces available for our community members with disabilities. Enforcement efforts will continue to ensure these designated parking spaces remain accessible to those they are intended to serve.

BRENTWOOD GATEWAY ARCH CELEBRATES 15 YEARS
|
|
|
|
|
On August 22, the Brentwood Gateway Arch marked its 15th anniversary, an occasion recognized and celebrated by City staff, City Council members and members of the community.
Commissioned through the 2008 Downtown Beautification Improvement Plan and designed by local architect Lance Crannell of SDG Architects, the Gateway Arch was created to do more than welcome people downtown. It was designed to tell the story of Brentwood.
Here are a few things you may not know about the Gateway Arch:

It frames Mount Diablo. The arch was intentionally positioned so Mount Diablo appears framed within the monument.

Its shape tells Brentwood's story. The horizontal base represents our eastern plains, while the rounded shoulders of the columns reflect the rolling Vasco hills.

There's real agricultural history inside it. The vertical "key lock" openings contain antique keys, locks and latches donated by local farmers, creating a physical connection to Brentwood's agricultural roots.

It includes a tactile map of downtown. Look closely and you'll find a touch-and-feel map featuring a silver "You Are Here" marker, inspired by architect Lance Crannell's earlier photo-montage installation at the old city library.

WEEKLY GREEN CART PICKUPS ARE IN THE WORKS
|
|
|
|
|
The Public Works Department is working to transition organics collection (green cart), from bi-weekly to weekly pickup.
Preparing for weekly service includes additional staffing, vehicle maintenance, and the purchase of five new electric garbage trucks. Public Works was able to secure approximately $1.3 million in rebates toward the purchase of the five trucks approved by Council on August 11, reducing the final purchase price to just under $3.6 million, compared with the originally anticipated cost of approximately $4.9 million. We're pleased to report these new trucks are scheduled to be delivered early next year. Weekly pickups for green carts are anticipated to roll out in early 2027.
We appreciate the community's patience as we work to expand and improve organics collection service.

CITY STAFF AT FARMERS' MARKET
|
|
|
|
|
The Brentwood Public Works Department and Economic Development Department connected with community members at the Farmers' Market, where staff shared water conservation tips, distributed organic kitchen pails, and met some inspiring young entrepreneurs.
The event provided a great opportunity for city staff to share helpful resources, support local businesses, and engage with residents in the community.
The next City Staff at the Farmers' Market event will take place on September 15. Community members are invited to stop by and meet Acting City Manager Terrance Davis and members of the Brentwood Police Department.

BRENTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP
|
|
|
|
|
Registration is still open for the Fall Neighborhood Cleanup Events on September 19 & 26. Brentwood residents who have an active garbage account are invited to participate in the City's FREE Cleanup Events. Residents can bring up to 2 cubic yards (1 pickup truck load or a small utility load) of unwanted household items including general yard waste, appliances, furniture, mattresses, metal, computers, TVs and other electronic waste, free of charge, to the Brentwood Transfer Station.
