Statement from Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Duardo on California's Election Results
"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Governor-elect Xavier Becerra, whose election as California's first elected Latino governor marks a historic milestone, and to Superintendent-elect Richard Barrera. I wish both leaders every success as they prepare to serve California's students, families and communities.
As someone whose life was transformed by education, I know the difference caring educators, strong schools and supportive communities can make. I am hopeful about the opportunity our new leaders have to build on that promise for every child.
Their leadership comes at a pivotal moment. Beginning January 1, 2027, California's new education governance structure will place management of the California Department of Education under a governor-appointed Education Commissioner, working under the State Board of Education, while the elected State Superintendent serves as an independent voice for students, families and educators.
Governor-elect Becerra and Superintendent-elect Barrera have an important opportunity to help shape this new chapter together. Strong partnerships across state and local leadership can turn this transition into more coordinated support for schools, educators and the families we all serve.
At LACOE, we look forward to being a committed partner in that work, bringing forward the voices of our communities and our shared belief in what young people can achieve. Congratulations to both leaders. I look forward to all we can accomplish together for California's children and families."
