A legal professional with more than 25 years of leadership experience in higher education and healthcare has been appointed Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel at The University of Toledo.
John "Jack" Newsome, who most recently served as strategic advisor to the president and previously served as senior vice president and general counsel at the Medical College of Wisconsin, joined UToledo on Jan. 2.

He has the wisdom to manage risk while advancing institutional priorities," UToledo President James Holloway said. The vice president and general counsel safeguards the University's legal interests, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, while mitigating legal risks across all aspects of educational, research and clinical operations. As UToledo's chief legal officer, he oversees the Office of Legal Affairs.
The Ohio Attorney General is the statutory legal advisor for all universities in the state and as UToledo's general counsel, Newsome has also been appointed as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio.
Newsome had served since 2015 as a top legal and business advisor at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he helped guide the college's progression to a multi-school health sciences university and supported the faculty practice plan with more than 2,000 care providers.
He also served as senior vice president and general counsel for Rothman Institute, a privately held provider of orthopedic care based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and as senior vice president and corporate counsel for Continuum Health Alliance, a management services and value-based care organization in Marlton, New Jersey, orchestrating restructuring plans at both organizations.
Earlier in his career, Newsome held the position of general counsel and chief legal officer at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson and Cooper University Health Care in Camden, New Jersey. He also has experience as an attorney in Pennsylvania and in other leadership roles for healthcare organizations.
Newsome earned his J.D. and Master of Business Administration from Widener University and a bachelor's degree in physical therapy from Thomas Jefferson University.
