Stay Off the Hook: How to Recognize Phishing Attempts

It's Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and we're sharing resources to help you stay safe online.

Picture this: You receive a text message that appears to be from TruNorth Bank stating:

"Fraud Alert: We detected unusual activity on your account. To prevent your debit card from being suspended, confirm your information immediately: [link]"

The text looks legitimate and creates a sense of urgency, encouraging you to click the link right away. However, the link leads to a fake website designed to steal your Online Banking credentials, debit card information, or other sensitive data.

This is a phishing attempt.

Scammers often impersonate trusted organizations, including financial institutions, because they know people are more likely to respond to messages related to their money or account security. Using urgency, fear, and impersonation tactics, fraudsters try to gain trust and convince victims to share personal information or send money. Older adults are often targeted because scammers may perceive them as more trusting and more likely to respond. That's why it's important for people of all ages to stay vigilant, verify unexpected requests, and help protect the older adults in their lives from fraud.

Remember: TruNorth Bank will never ask you to provide sensitive information such as passwords, access codes, or banking account credentials through an unsolicited text message or email. If you're unsure whether a message is legitimate, contact us directly at 855.527.4111 rather than clicking links in the message.

Red Flags of a Phishing Attempt

  • Typos, poor grammar, or unusual formatting
  • Messages creating a false sense of urgency or fear
  • Requests for passwords, account information, or other sensitive data
  • Suspicious links or unexpected attachments
  • Generic greetings such as "Dear Customer"
  • Contact information that doesn't match a company's official website
  • Unexpected invoices, payment requests, or calendar invitations
  • Requests to call a phone number to resolve an urgent issue

If something feels off, trust your instincts. Taking a few extra seconds to verify a message can help protect your personal information and finances from fraud.
