Tech support scams are designed to make you panic. You might see an alarming pop-up claiming your computer is infected, receive a phone call from someone claiming to be "Microsoft Support," or get a message warning that your account or device has been compromised. The scammer then offers to fix the problem, often asking you to call a number, install remote access software, provide personal information, or pay for their "help." In reality, the emergency may not exist at all.
Watch for these warning signs:
If a pop-up suddenly says your computer has a virus, don't click anything in the message and don't call the number it provides. Close the browser or application instead. If someone contacts you claiming to be tech support, end the conversation and contact the company or the ITS Service Desk if it is a UT-owned device through TechConnect or their phone number at 901.448.2222. Never give remote access to your computer to someone who contacted you unexpectedly.
The most important thing to remember is that scammers want you to panic before you have time to think. Slow down, verify the problem independently, and remember: legitimate tech support shouldn't have to scare you into accepting their help.
