Bicarbonate as a Potential Confounding Factor in Cladoceran Toxicity Assessments of Pore Water from Contaminated Sediments - DCN SE12144

This article summarizes research on elevated sediment pore-water alkalinity in the Grand Calumet River and its toxic effects on cladocerans. Laboratory tests showed sodium bicarbonate toxicity to Daphnia magna and Ceriodaphnia dubia, likely due to bicarbonate inhibiting chloride uptake. The findings suggest pore-water alkalinity should be considered when interpreting sediment and effluent toxicity tests.
