Essay Contest Invites Students to Reflect on America at 250

Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie is launching a special essay contest to kick off the celebrations leading up to America's 250^th Anniversary. Leader McCombie's "America 250 Essay Contest" invites students from grades 6-12 in her 89^th District to participate!

The contest asks students to choose from several prompts about America's history, including the questions: "Imagine the next 250 years?" and "What does it mean to you to be a part of America's story?"

McCombie is asking that all entries be original work, be between 200 and 500 words, and included a completed release form signed by a parent or guardian. The essays are due by May 31, 2026, and can be sent via email to [email protected]. A parent or guardian release form can be found on HERE. The winner will be announced in June and receive special recognition from Leader McCombie.

McCombie is excited to see what students across northwest Illinois have to say about the upcoming celebration of America's great history.

"America's 250^th Anniversary is a once in a lifetime opportunity; it is a time for not only celebration but reflection on just how far our country has come," said McCombie. "As we inch closer to the big day, I want to give students a way to engage with our shared history."
